On 15th April, 1915, the 1st Royal Berkshire battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division, moved into the front line at the Cuinchy brick works where they remained until relieved on 19th April. The battalion diary for 15th April recorded that it was a quiet day and that nothing of interest happened but This is not a view that would have been shared by Frederick Budden who was killed was killed on this day. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
